The Bridge of Sighs:A Bridge of Legends

Picture this: a graceful white limestone bridge arching over the Rio di Palazzo, connecting the Doge’s Palace with the New Prison. This is the Bridge of Sighs, aptly named for the bittersweet sighs said to escape from the prisoners as they crossed over to their cells, glimpsing the outside world for the last time. But don’t let the melancholy name dampen your spirits – there’s a glimmer of hope and romance to the legend as well!

The Bridge of Sighs was built in the early 17th century, designed by Antonio Contino, to serve as a covered passageway for prisoners. It is made of white limestone and features beautiful, ornate Baroque-style windows with stone bars.

The bridge’s small windows are enclosed with stone grills, allowing very little light to pass through. The design of the bridge was intended to evoke a sense of sadness and despair.
