One of my 2023 goals is to read 50 books this year. Yes, it’s the same as last year and, yes, that’s okay. You can review a list of all the books I rate 5 stars in 2022.

The Final Gambit

1. The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Category: Mystery

To inherit billions, all Avery Kylie Grambs has to do is survive a few more weeks living in Hawthorne House. The paparazzi are dogging her every step. Financial pressures are building. Danger is a fact of life. And the only thing getting Avery through it all is the Hawthorne brothers. Her life is intertwined with theirs.

I liked this book except for the fact that I didn’t read the original one first. I like the characters, the games, the secrecy – the overall plot. I just jumped into a story that I needed a little background information on first.

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

2. These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Category: Fantasy

A take on Romeo and Juliet, eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal.

I read half of this book and quit. I just couldn’t do it.
